Sightseeing in Marrakech

Sightseeing in Marrakech is one of the preferred activities for the tourists. Divided into two separate parts: the Medina or the historical city and the new city with two major districts namely Gueliz and Hivernage, the city of Marrakech with its colors, sounds and smells is an ideal choice for the holiday makers. The fascinating city of Marrakech features abundant tourist attractions and travelers can easily go for Sightseeing in Marrakech.

The tourists looking for Sightseeing at Marrakech can visit the following destinations:

El Badi Palace
Built by the Sa'adian king, Ahmed Al Mansour, in 1578, it is one of the finest palaces in the world. There are 360 rooms tastefully decorated in marble, gold, onyx, ivory, cedar wood and semi-precious stones, encircling a central courtyard of pools, fountains and sunken gardens.

Jemaa-el-Fna (Place of the Dead)
The great square of Jemaa-el-Fna is the center of medina life. By day, it is a popular market and gathering place with numerous stalls. Jemaa-el-Fna is surrounded by a number of cafes and restaurants.

Koutoubia Mosque
The minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, dominating the skyline of the city, is a famous landmark. It dates since the 12th century and was one of the earliest monuments that created the classic Moroccan design.

Majorelle Garden and Museum of Islamic Art
Maintained by the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, this privately owned botanical garden was built in the 1920s by the famous French artists Jacques and Louis Majorelle. It features perfectly manicured gardens, complete with pools, giant cacti, bamboo, coconut and banana trees. The Majorelles' old studio is now the Museum of Islamic Art.

Sa'adian Tombs
Opened to the public in 1917, the Sa'adian Tombs is one of the most visited sites in the city of Marrakech. There are two separate mausoleums, with over 100 mosaic-decorated graves scattered around, inside the enclosed garden.

The Souks and Tanneries
The chief souks are found through an arch to the north of the Jemaa-el-Fna. Each and every section has its own specialty such as robes, slippers, spices and jewelry. The tanneries with their leather dyeing workshops and giant pots of colorful dye are worth a visit.
