Bab Rouah was built in the year 1197 by Yaacoub Al Mansour Al Mouahidi. This 28 meter long, 27 meter deep and 12 meter high structure is the largest door of the enclosure almohade. It is also one of the most richly decorated structures in the region. Literally, Bab Rouah means 'door winds'. According to some others it means 'back door'. The gate provides access to four rooms of 5.65 square meters, linking them by two vestibules of 4.20 meter by 2.20 meter area.
In the early 1960's, the Bab Rouah, Rabat was converted into an exhibition gallery. The gallery is beautifully decorated with modern Moroccan art. This magnificent gallery is a major attraction of this wall gate. The gallery was further developed in the year 2001, under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture. It reopened in April 2002, and today it is a venue where national and international exhibitions are hosted.
The Bab Rouah, Rabat feature two huge spotlights. The portico of the structure is made of stone. The interior of the Bab Rouah houses a number of rooms including two open-pits. The first pit is enclosed by a wonderful cupola on tubes.
