Wildlife in Beira

Wildlife in Beira can make for exciting Beira Tours. Tucked away in the central region of the country in Sofala Province where the Pungue River meets the Indian Ocean, Beira is the second largest city in Mozambique. If you have already visited the popular Tourist Attractions in Beira and planning for something exciting to travel to, then take a trip to the Gorongosa National Park which is the best site to experience the Wildlife in Beira.

Gorongosa National Park is situated in the lower Pungue River catchment area in the floor of the Great East African Rift Valley in the Sofala Province and it is spread across a total area of 3,770 square km. The region is of varied habitats including the Afro-mountain forest, highland and lowland miombo woodland, mopane woodland, extensive palm and grasslands, thickets, swamps and lakeshore due to its close proximity to the coast. The area between the coast and Gorongosa Mountain features the highest biodiversity in Mozambique. 74 different vegetation systems, 15 geological formations and some 40 soil types have been identified here. The ecosystems form a grid pattern through the north-south Rift coast parallel zones joined by riverine bands from inland to the coast.

The Gorongosa National Park was first set aside for hunting purposes by the then Governor Pery de Linde in 1920. In 1921, an area of 1,000 square km and later an extension of 3, 200 square km, was officially acknowledged as Game Reserve in 1935. The park attained is actual status in 1960. It took various shapes and sizes with the maximum size of 12,000 square km in 1956.

Gorongosa National Park boasts the richest collection of Wildlife in Beira. It has the most varied habitat types, 36 vegetation types in the region which is home to diverse and abundant wildlife species. It is unfortunate to note that the numbers of most large mammal species have been heavily reduced. But, the animal numbers are now increasing and tourists can see large herds of Waterbuck, Impala, Oribi, Kudu, Hartebeest, Reedbuck and Inhala’s here. You can also spot here lions and elephants. The avifauna with more than 580 species, including endemic species and rarities remains an attraction of the park for Wildlife in Beira.
