Facts about Beira

Facts about Beira can be very useful to a person who is traveling to this place for the first time. Facts about Beira deals with various details of the place which includes its history, economy and various tourist attractions.

The city is the second largest city in Mozambique in terms of size. It is located in the central region of the country in Sofala Province, where the Pungue River meets the Indian Ocean. The city has the busiest and the largest port in Mozambique. The city also resembles a mixture of the oriental and the continental life of Africa.

The sprawling city is built on a swampy ground and is famous for its lakes, churches and gardens. It is located at the mouth of Pungwe river and is very hot and humid during the summer months. The population of the city is more than four millions now.

Here in the city you will find the "Beira Corridor" which is a road and railway line constructed from the east coast. This corridor was built to facilitate Zimbabwe to have a direct link to the sea. The city was badly damaged during the war but is now catching up with its pre war image. The present atmosphere of the city is ideal for a holiday as you have a number of tourist attractions here.

The city was established in the year 1890 and soon became the most important port of the Sofala province. It was previously considered as the core city of Renamo province. After the post revolution civil war which ended in the year 1994 the city became a core constituency of this province. During the colonial period Beira was noted for its large English speaking population and became a favorite holiday destination for the Rhodesians. This can be clearly understood by the presence of the Grande Hotel near the shore of the Indian Ocean, which now lies in ruins, but is still occupied by around 1,000 poor Beirans.

The place was ravaged badly in the year 2000 by floods along with Maputo and most of Southern Mozambique. During this time millions were left homeless and hundreds died.
