Before going to Mozambique, you can go through the history of Mozambique. The first inhabitants of Mozambique were the San hunters and gatherers. In between 1st and 4th centuries AD, Mozambique saw the inflow of Bantu-speaking people. They came from the north crossing the Zambezi River and settled down in the valleys and the plateaus.
Vasco da Gama was the first European to know about Mozambique when he reached Mozambique in 1498. He wanted to enquire about the settlement of the Arabs. The political control of Mozambique at that time was in the hands of the sultans.
History of Mozambique took a dramatic turn during the year 1500, when the Portuguese started to put up trading posts and forts in the country. Special mention should be made of the square fort at the northern extreme of Mozambique, which was built with the ballast stone brought from Portugal in the year 1510.
In the year 1891, the Portuguese decided to hand over the administration of the country to a large private company Companhia de Moçambique, which had its headquarters at Beira.
After the end of World War II, emigration to Mozambique increased manifold. However, the urge for independence also increased with time and thus this era saw the colonial groups forming the party - Front for the Liberation of Mozambique. This party was the frontrunner in carrying on armed campaign against Portuguese colonial rule.
After 10 years of sporadic warfare, finally FRELIMO took the control of the capital of Mozambique by a coup in the year 1974. All the Portuguese colonialists left within a year and finally independence was ushered in Mozambique in the year 1975.
Next few years, however culminated in some major events that left marks on the historical background of Mozambique. The most important among these events is the civil war.
The year 1994 marked a glorious event in the history of Mozambique that witnessed a new beginning- the beginning of democracy. Elections were held and FRELIMO became the winning party. Another breakthrough in the politics of Mozambique came when Mozambique joined the Commonwealth of Nations became the first one to become a member in spite of not being part of the British Empire.
