The Cathedral in Praça da Independencia

The Cathedral is one of the most important places to see in the area. The Cathedral is situated at one of the main squares in Maputo on Praça da Independencia. This building is relatively contemporary and was built in the year 1944. The shape of the cathedral is pretty unusual since it was designed as a cross. However most of the times it remains closed and the visitors can only look at it from the outside.

The City Hall in Praça da Independencia

The City Hall of Maputo was completed in the year 1945 and is one of the most impressive attractions in Praça da Independencia. The City Hall is located at one of the main squares in Maputo on Praça da Independencia. The building is close to the cathedral of the city. The massive pillars and portico of this building are a part of the design that houses the city government today.

The Botanical Gardens in Praça da Independencia.

The Botanical Gardens are known as the green haven right in the middle of the town centre. It is situated close to both the cathedral and city hall, at one of the squares of the Praça da Independencia. The local people come here often to take pictures after weddings or just to relax in this lush green subtropical place.

Iron House in Praça da Independencia

The Iron House was designed by Gustave Eiffel, of Eiffel Tower fame, in the year 1892. It is made up entirely of steel walls and roof, all bolted together. It was originally intended as the Governor's house.

Statue of Samora Machel in Praça da Independencia

The Statue of Samora Machel is that of the Mozambique's first President from 1975 to 1986. After he died in an air crash in South Africa under suspicious circumstances, this statue was built in his honor.
