Sightseeing in Mozambique

The oldest and largest building of the island is St Sebastiao. It is a solid 12 meter high colossus at the northern end of the island and was built around 400 years ago. The defenders put 400 canons that pointed towards the Indian Ocean for any sudden attack.

The fort was so strong to external attacks that even the mighty Dutch were repelled back in 1607 and also in 1608. Within the compound of the fort is The Chapel of our Lady of the Bulwarks that was built in1522. It is said to be the oldest building that is still standing in the southern hemisphere.

There are labyrinth of narrow streets with tall buildings and busy harbor and a market. There is a 7th century palace museum that is filled with old cannons, muskets, sedan chairs and other paraphernalia that were taken by the Portuguese colonists from around the world.

The island provides some good watersports in Mozambique. One can go for diving at the northern end of the island. But it is recommended for experienced divers though. One can go for boat trip or laze on the beach under the sun. The adventurous ones can take a dhow across the mainland at Chaga or Mossuril to explore the coastal area.
