Manta Reef, Tofo is regarded as not only one of the major Tourist Attractions in Tofo but also as one of the finest dive sites in the entire Africa. The reef offers a huge diversity of marine life including numerous giant mantas, up to 6 meter in width, which give the reef its name. The reef has north and south walls with adjacent pinnacles of rocks which create gullies at depths of 24 meters to 28 meters. The top of the reef is quite flat with beautiful soft corals. Manta Reef, Tofo has acquired legendary status in dive circles.
Tofo is not known for its reefs or coral, but for its big fish like whale sharks, manta rays and humpback whales. Manta Reef is amazing with its beautiful coral and crusty rock, tall pinnacles and low swim-throughs which provide shelter to sea urchins and schools of bright yellow fish.
The walls of the Manta Reef, Tofo are home to large schools of yellow snapper, barracuda, bigeyes, fusiliers, hundreds of bright blue, red-tooth trigger fish, tiny goldies, fairy basslets and others. The overhangs and small caverns of the Manta Reef in Tofo are inhabited by large potato and other groupers along with large trumpet fish, green turtles, sweetlips and others. The cracks and crevices are home to scorpion fish, morays and you will spot here a large variety of them which includes giant, honeycomb, geometric, yellow-edge and white mouth! Plus, there will be crocodile fish, Spanish dancers and a whole array of nudibranches and cowries. Devil rays and at times, eagle rays can be seen swimming above the reef. And, if you are fortunate enough, you might see white tip reef sharks and other rays.
If you descent to 28 meters, you will find visibility of about 10 meters and the water temperature at 22°C at Manta Reef, Tofo. You can spot here a school of giant Penciled Surgeon fish. There are three main cleaning stations where huge manta rays circle and hover to allow small fish, usually wrasses, to remove parasites from their bodies.
