The Union of Myanmar is the largest Southeast Asian country by area. Also known as Burma, Myanmar is bordered on its north by China and to its east is Laos. Thailand is located on the southeast and Bangladesh is to its west. Myanmar is bordered on its northwest by India and the Bay of Bengal is found to the southwest of the country. The capital of the country is Rangoon (Yangon).
Geography of Myanmar
The north of the country has the Hengduan Shan Mountains that borders with China. The highest point of the country is the Kachin State that is located at a height of 5881 meter. There are three mountain ranges in Burma, namely the Rakhine Yoma, the Bago Yoma and the Shan Plateau. These mountains run from north-to south from the Himalayas. The mountains divide the three river systems of Ayeyarwady, Thanlwin and the Sittang rivers.
The longest river is Ayeyarwady River running a distance of 2170 kilometers long. There are fertile plains in the valleys between the mountain ranges. Large section of the population of the country are inhabited in the Ayeyarwady valley which is located between the Rakhine Yoma and the Shan Plateau.
Weather in Myanmar
Myanmar lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator and is situated in the monsoon region of Asia. The coastal region of the country receive around 5000 mm of rainfall yearly. In the delta region, the annual rainfall is around 2500 mm. The dry zone in the central Burma has an average rainfall of less than 1000 mm. The northern side of the country is the coolest and has average temperatures of 21 degree centigrade. The mean temperatures found in the coastal and delta regions is 32 degree Centigrade.
Politics in Myanmar
The Union of Myanmar has a strict military regime. The majority of the posts of ministry and cabinet are held by the military officers. The ministries of health, deduction, labor, national planning and economic development are held by civilians.
Economy of Myanmar
Myanmar is one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia. This is mainly due to decades of stagnation, mismanagement and isolation. The economy grows at a rate of 2.9% which is the lowest rate of economic growth in the whole of Greater Mekong Subregion.
Tourism in Myanmar
Tourism has been hugely encouraged in Myanmar since 1992. Tourism is promoted by the minority of advocacy groups for providing economic benefit to the civilians of the country.
Language of Myanmar
The official language of Myanmar is Burmese which is the mother tongue of the Bamar. It is linguistically linked with Tibetan and the Chinese languages. The script consist of circular and semi-circular letters and is derived from the Mon script.
