Every year, lots of tourists and travelers visit this Mul Chowk / Kumari Chowk to get a glimpse of the art and architecture of the historical palace.

At one point of time, the vast palace precinct is reputed to have comprised of 99 courtyards. Later, 6 of the courtyards survived. However, for security reasons, the majority of the courtyards are closed for the public. The only access to Mul Chowk is the path from Sundhoka that winds round Bhairava Chowk to a carved wooden entrance gate at the Chowk. The Mul Chowk / Kumari Chowk in Bhaktapur is the oldest and most central of the palace courts that is dedicated to the Goddess Taleju.

While on a visit to Bhaktapur in Nepal, tourists will get to catch the stunning art and architecture of the courts, the main temple, with statues of Ganga and Jamuna, even more ornate than their counterparts in Patan. On the west side of the Chowk, there is a triple temple portal, the central opening giving access to only Kumari Chowk. The buildings really reveal the aura and splendor of the rich heritage and culture of the Nepal kings.

The Mul Chowk was the main courtyard inside the palace, is dedicated to Lord Taleju, the clan deity of the Malla Kings. The Taleju Temple, adjoining to the Mul Chowk is the oldest standing monument of the Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Close to the Mul Chowk / Kumari Chowk is another temple, the Yakseswar Mahadev temple built as a duplicate of Pashupati.

The Mul Chowk-Mul Chowk resembles almost a Vihar or Buddhist Monastery and was the center of all important functions and rituals of the Malla Kings.

The Kumari Chowk was built in the year 1757 by King Jaya Prakash Malla. The Chowk was the home of the "Kumari" or the living goddess who is considered to be an incarnation of the Goddess Taleju. It is a 3-storeyed building that is beautifully decorated and includes fine bay windows.
