The Nyatapola Mandir is located in the beautiful and stunning Bhaktapur that is the jewel of the Kathmandu Valley. It was built by King Bhupatindra Malla in the year 1702. There are 5 main pairs of statues flanking the steps leading to the temple. These pairs of guardians are placed in order of increasing strength. The first 2 figures are the 2 Malla Era wrestlers believed to have equaled the strength of 10 men.
On the next higher plinth, there are the statues of elephants, lions, the griffins and of 2 demi-Goddesses represented by a tigress and a lioness, Vyagrini and Singhini. The name of the temple is called Nyatapola because the name of the Tantric goddess remains unknown. Nyatapola means 5-storeyed and it is a unique temple in the Kathmandu Valley.
Nyatapola Mandir is the tallest temple and a masterpiece in Kathmandu, rising to a height of 50 meters or 164 feet on a 5-tiered platform which further enhances its monumental effect. The foot of the stairway is flanked by the so-called Dvara Pallas, 2 legendary wrestlers Jayamel and Phattu, credited with the strength of ten men.
The Nyatapola Mandir in Bhaktapur is distinguished from the other temples, not only by its size but also for its perfect proportions and ornamental detail. The 20 columns of the veranda appear strong and slender and all are beautifully carved and worked upon. The various forms of the Bhagawati Mahishamardini and other deities are portrayed with great artistry in the temple walls and interiors.
