Potter's square is a famous place of attraction in Bhaktapur. Tourists get to buy many humble art work made of clay in this part of Bhaktapur. A visit to Bhaktapur must be complemented by a visit to Potter's Square so that one gets an idea of the exquisite and down to earth local craftsmanship of the Himalayan country.

There are many other examples of the newer craftsmanship in Bhaktapur other than the ones depicted by grand historic structures and temples of the place. One such exquisite art is clay craftsmanship.

A place in Bhaktapur is devoted to life and works of potters in Bhaktapur. This place is called the Potter's Square. Here one can come across a variety of earthen wares of varying size and in contrasting colors on display. Arguably this is the best and largest collection of earthenware's on earth.

Under the old Hindu caste system, someone born in a potter's family is destined to pick up the reins of his ancestors. And the tradition will be passed on to his children. In Bhaktapur pottery is made using the same century-old methods as practiced by generations. Potter's under shady verandahs or tin-roofed sheds spinning wheels made of wood or automobile tires is a familiar sight in Bhaktapur. Sights of clay being kneaded by hand or foot is very common in the area. In the square one will come across thousands of finished pots sit drying in the sun.

Mostly, sugar pot, astray, lamp candle, face candle, candle handle, Buddha head, elephant idols and flower pots are the product made on a regular basis. While the earthen wares are used for domestic purposes the crafted pots and statues are specially used in the Newari culture for traditional rituals and decorations.

The clay is bought from the local clay seller. For more than a month the clay is mixed with water so that it becomes soft to the desired extent. The clay is then given the required shape by hand powered wheels. The finished creations are then arranged in rows to dry in the sun before heating them which turns it brick red.
