Among the tourist spots in Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu Valley, the Taumadhi Tole - Bhairava Temple is visited by large numbers of pilgrims and ordinary people. The Taumadhi Tole - Bhairava Temple is constructed in a Typical Rectangular Plan of a Bhairava or Bhimsen Shrine in the style of a house restored after 1934 earthquake. Tourists from far and wide come to the Bhairava Temple to worship the god and to pray for good luck and happiness for near and dear ones.
Taumadhi Tole - Bhairava Temple is typically rectangular in shape unlike the other temples of the period that are generally square. The Bhairava Temple is clearly seen from the A kasha Bhairava Mandir in Kathmandu. The worship room is not on the ground floor. The Taumadhi Tole - Bhairava Temple in Bhaktapur was built after the original temple got destroyed after the 1934 earthquake.
The history of the Kasi Biswanath Mandir can be traced back to the 16th Century. The original single-storey building was enlarged by the King Bhupatindra Malla in the year 1717. After the 1934 earthquake, it was completely rebuilt in the traditional style incorporating some of the old temple. A third storey was added at the same time to the existing temple.
You can get inside the temple via a small shrine dedicated to Bhairava's bearer Betal. Every year, Betal accompanies the god in the Bisket Jatra Festival and large numbers of people visit Bhaktapur in Nepal to participate in this grand festival. After the festival gets over, Betal is kept inside the temple with its head down to the beams of his temple, being considered an evil spirit who brings ill fortune.
The 56 carved roof strut of the Taumadhi Tole - Bhairava Temple depict Bhagmati and the mother deities. The lower roofs are tiled, while the upper roofs are gilded and crowned by 7 magnificent torana that are doors surrounded by figural decoration.
Lord Bhairava's image is located on the first floor, from where the god can look out of the 5 gilded windows onto the square in front of it. The god's mask appears at a window between the middle and lower roofs. During the Bisket Jatra Festival, Bhairava is borne through the various streets of Kathmandu in a chariot procession.
