History of Nepal

The History of Nepal dates back to the Kiratis. This clan came to this country in the seventh or eighth century BC from the eastern side. Not much information is available about this clan other than that these people were shepherds and they carried long knives. The History of Nepal will give an insight into the rich past of this country.

Buddhism came into existence in Nepal during the Maurya reign in India. The Buddhist influence in this country dates back to 4th C. The Culture of Nepal was shaped by various kingdoms who ruled this country.

Later the Kirat dynasty rose up in Nepal. Not much information is available about this dynasty. But this dynasty reigned this country for more than a thousand years and were around twenty-eight kings has governed this country under this dynasty.

According to the objects found from the ancient capital of Handigaun it can be said that the Licchavi kingdom ruled this place twice. First, they ruled around 200 CE to the 5th C, and second during 750 to 1200 CE.

After the Licchavis, the next strong power that ruled this country was the Newar Empire. One of the kings united this place but his power did not last long and Nepal was divided into 3 medieval kingdoms.

Contemporary Nepal was formed during eighteenth century, under the rule of Prithvi Narayan Shah. He was in power of the small principality of the Gorkhas. Many independent hill states joined hands to form one kingdom. During this time, this nation was also famous as Gorkha land.

After the Gorkhas, the Rana regime came to power. According to this regime a strong centralized autocracy was followed. As a result this country became detached from the external influences. This policy was a boon to this country as it held its national independence even at the time of the colonial rule. But this stunted Nepal's economic growth.

The Ranas were the supporters of the British and helped them against the Sepoy Mutiny that broke out in India in the year 1857. They even helped during the World Wars.

According to the Nepal History, during the twentieth century, the British accepted this country's independence. This treaty was signed in the year 1923. The Map of Nepal got a firm footing in the world.

Later democratic reforms were carried out during the twentieth century and the demand for democracy was made. Many famous people of Nepal lost their lives in the struggle for democracy in this country. A democratic government was also set up here.

But this democratic government was overthrown and a Royal Coup was proclaimed by King Mahendra. After King Mahendra, his son Birendra was crowned the next king. A lot of dissatisfaction rose among the people who wanted the democratic government. The King had to accept the constitutional monarchy. But in spite of this many violent uprisings took place. These uprisings were suppressed by the Government.

Later a Nepalese Civil War led by the Maoist leaders broke out in this country in February in 1996. Many small districts were proclaimed independent with people's government.

During 2001 King Dipendra, the son of Birendra shot eleven family members which included the king and his wife. Birendra also shot himself but survived. He later succumbed to his wounds and passed away. The throne was taken over by the King's brother Gyanendra who took over the reins of the country by removing the government to get rid of the Maoist insurgency. But this was not welcomed by the people living in the country. Many riots and disturbances kept occurring in different parts of this nation. The country as of January 2007 has been ruled by the unicameral legislature under the interim constitution.
