Ichangu Narayan, Kathmandu is situated to the west of Kathmandu behind the Swayambhu stupa, at a beautiful surrounding. This temple which is one of the major sightseeing attractions of Kathmandu is located at the tip of a mountain ridge and overlooks the Ichangu Valley which lies about 5 kilometer north-west of Kathmandu. To reach the Ichangu Narayan, Kathmandu you have to take the dirt road that goes across the Ring Road from the Swayambhu bus stop. This road leads to the village of Ichangu which lies hidden behind the hills and offers the tourists a taste of history, religion and hiking.

On the way to the village you would come across a limestone quarry and then the road would turn into a trail and you would find yourself going through scattered houses in a village. It will take you an hour's walk to reach the Ichangu Narayan, Kathmandu. It is one of the four main shrines of Narayan and the name of the temple means the deity is Narayan of the west and is protecting the valley and its inhabitants.

The Ichangu Narayan, Kathmandu is a two-roofed pagoda style temple that dates back to the fifth century. It is believed that probably the Newaris used this site for worshipping before they converted to Hinduism. This present day temple of Ichangu Narayan, Kathmandu dates from the 18th century and it was built on the site of the earlier temple that was built in the year 1512 after a major famine. You would find a small shrine of Bhagwati located above Ichangu Narayan and from there you would get a wonderful view across the Ichangu Valley.

The temple of Ichangu Narayan attracts lots of pilgrims, especially on the full moon day of August 26. This is the day when devotees visit all the four Narayan temples in the Valley. Though it is the best day to visit Ichangu Narayan, Kathmandu but you can go for this place of attraction in Kathmandu at any time and you would love to be there.
