Patan Durbar Square is the most famous and frequented places in the city of Patan. Patan is situated 5 kilometers southeast of Kathmandu. The historical city is the oldest of the three ancient kingdoms of Kathmandu Valley and located on the banks of picturesque Bhagmati River. Durbar Square in Patan is said to be the former royal palace of Kathmandu and full of ancient palaces, temples and shrines. The three storey structure of the temple shows exclusive Shikhara style and portrays the scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata. The first floor is occupied with the statue of Lord Krishna. It is one of the most visited temples in the city and is crowded by thousands of devotees during the festival of Janmashtami.
Golden temple is situated near the Square complex and also known as Hiranya Varna Mahavihar. Built in the 12th Century, the temple is regarded as the richest temples in the city. It is extremely popular among the Buddhists. The building of the temple features three roofs with copper golden facades and tow lions at the entrance of the temple.
The visitors are attracted to several stone waterbaths which are associated with various legends and episodes of history that are placed within the several palaces inside the premises.
