Patan Durbar Square




Patan Durbar Square is the most famous and frequented places in the city of Patan. Patan is situated 5 kilometers southeast of Kathmandu. The historical city is the oldest of the three ancient kingdoms of Kathmandu Valley and located on the banks of picturesque Bhagmati River. There are numerous tourist attractions in Patan, others being Durbar Square which is the best known tourist spot.

Durbar Square in Patan is said to be the former royal palace of Kathmandu and full of ancient palaces, temples and shrines. The popular site is regarded as a World Heritage Site that features unique architecture. The square attracts there is mainly the starting point of the sightseeing tour in Patan. The entire complex comprises of three courtyards or “chowks”, such as - Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk and Keshav Narayan Chowk.

There are many buildings located inside the square premises which are supposed to be the greatest achievements of the Malla Dynasty. There are many other palaces, temples and monuments located inside Durbar Square. The visitors can get to see the house of the Living Goddess, temples of Kal Bhairab and the Red monkey god.

Among the other temples, the most prominent is the Krishna Temple which is dedicated to the Lord Krishna. The temple was built by Siddhi Narsingha Malla in 1637. The three storey structure of the temple shows exclusive Shikhara style and portrays the scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata. The first floor is occupied with the statue of Lord Krishna. It is one of the most visited temples in the city and is crowded by thousands of devotees during the festival of Janmashtami.

Golden temple is situated near the Square complex and also known as Hiranya Varna Mahavihar. Built in the 12th Century, the temple is regarded as the richest temples in the city. It is extremely popular among the Buddhists. The building of the temple features three roofs with copper golden facades and tow lions at the entrance of the temple.

The visitors are attracted to several stone waterbaths which are associated with various legends and episodes of history that are placed within the several palaces inside the premises.
