Oude Kerk, Amsterdam

Oude Kerk, Amsterdam is a very old church in the city of Amsterdam. It is one of the most beautiful buildings that can be found here. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Amsterdam. Travelers can reach it from the Central Station. It will take only 5 minutes to reach the church. Tourists will find the boat services equally good for the journey to the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam. Metro services are also available here.

The date of construction of the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam goes back to some time between 13th and 14th century. Before the establishment of the church this place was used as a cemetery. The original building was 30 meters in length. The church is very spacious. Worshipers will be able to pray here quite comfortably. The church did not come to any harm in the fires of the 1421 and 1452. The present form of the church was the result of the renovation process that it underwent. The process started on 1954 and was completed in 1979. Since then it is one of the main places of worship for the people here and a very beautiful place of sightseeing in Amsterdam.

The history of this church is also a record book that will inform you about various organists who used to play here. One such name is that of the Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. He performed in this church in 1577 and 1621. To show respect to his memory the authorities here organized an International Organ Competition. They chose the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam as the venue of the competition. This was held in the year 2005. The organ that this great musician played was a property of this church and was repaired later in 1965.

Apart from these the church had many other organs, in fact its collection of organs was one of the best. The other organs here are the great organ, the small organ and the cabinet organ. The cabinet organ is now kept in the Old Church and is used during the choir. These organs too are parts of the attractions in Amsterdam. Oude Kerk, Amsterdam is, therefore, a very fine place to visit during your sightseeing in Amsterdam.
