Burgers Zoo, Arnhem is considered to be one of the most famous zoos of Netherlands. Burgers Zoo, Arnhem is located at 85 Schelmseweg in the Gelderland area of Arnhem. The zoo is popular with both the Dutch and the German people. It is located exactly to the west of Arnhem's Open Air Museum at a distance of about 500 to 550 yards. The place is famous for chimpanzees and gorillas which can be watched from a certain distance.
The other attractions of this zoo are the varieties of birds, its wolves' forests,, a small tropical house and its magnificent rock enclosures. A beautiful safari park lies in the precincts of the Zoo. The tourists can tour the entire place with the help of the "Safari train" or can travel in their own car. During this tour the tourists get glimpses of African Savannas with lions, giraffes, rhinos and cheetahs . These animals roam around freely and can be watched very closely.
The zoo is primarily famous for the "Chimpanzee colony" established in the year 1971. The Chimpanzee colony was created with the sole objective of providing natural habitat to the Chimpanzee community and for the preservation and maintenance of the animals.The main aim of this colony was to let the Chimpanzees grow freely without the interference of common people.
At the same time a group was formed which started observing the social behavior of the Chimpanzees. Many documentaries and films were also made at this time related to the social and overall behavior of Chimpanzees. The zoo has an open enclosure of about 0.7 hectares for the animals to roam freely. The enclosure has large wooden structures and trees most of which have twisted electric wires for protection. A huge ditch made of water and plant stems isolates the apes from the public. The chimpanzees spend the nights in night cages where food is served to them daily.
The zoo is open from 9 am in the morning to 7pm in the night. A certain fee is charged for entering the Zoo.
