Openlucht museum, Arnhem is one of the most important places of tourist attraction in Netherlands. Openlucht museum, Arnhem is situated at the Schelmseweg locale in the Gelderland area of Arnhem. It has an area of 33 hectares. It was founded in the year 1912 due to the initiative taken by the common people. The main aim behind constructing this museum was to preserve the way of life and different art forms of the common folk so that the culture of the land would remain intact and would not be destroyed by industrialization. At the very beginning, the museum concentrated mainly on the lifestyle and working conditions of the rural people but gradually it started preserving the features related to urban and industrial setting.
Besides consisting of farmers' and fishermen's houses, windmills of all kinds and a variety of craftsmen workshops, the museum also features:
A steam sawmill from Groenlo,
A steam-driven dairy from Veenwouden
An entire group of houses from the Zaan area.
The tourists visiting this place can view all sorts of ancient houses which were brought intact from the sites of their origin. These houses were adorned with furniture and equipments too. The Houses are displayed in the Museum along with the furniture with which they were discovered. The main exhibition building displays many traditional costumes while a cart shed houses different types of carts and coaches for public display.
Besides the above, a comprehensive collection of traditional Dutch costumes are also found in the museum. Textiles of different varieties from different corners of Netherlands can be found in the museum too. The museum is always closed during New Year's Day, Christmas and New Year's Eve. The cost for entering the museum is 11.70 euros for the adults and 11.20 euros for the seniors who are above 65 years. Children who are below 3 years of age are given free admission to the museum. The museum also has facilities for the disabled.
