Stadhuis (Town Hall) in Delft is an important landmark and difficult to miss. The town hall building was completely destroyed when a fire broke out in 1618. Today a tower called, Het Nieuwe Steen and remains of some walls are the only remnants of the building. The building was originally built during 13th Century and was designed by an architect, known as Hendrick de Keyser. After that another tower made of brick and stone was erected on the substructure of the original building. Then the town hall was again reconstructed in 19th Century and selected to house the councilors, town council and a district court. Various meetings of the councils and councilors were used to be held in the town hall. The building was also allowed to use for many weddings and festive occasions.
Het Nieuwe Steen is an integral part of the town hall building which has a gallery at the bottom. The upper part of the tower is designed with bells, clockwork and a carillon.
There are several rooms set within the Stadhuis (Town Hall), recognized as one of the famous tourist attractions in Delft. At the entrance one can find the Entrance hall or Citizen Hall which was used as a waiting room for the locals who used to see the Mayor. Orphans Chamber is another room which features unique red sandstone flooring and some of the valuable paintings. Secret Document Storage Room is understood to be an important room where various important documents and papers of the Mayor were kept.
The visitors can see the room of the Mayor which is well known as Burgermeesterenkamer. The room has rich and tasteful furniture and interiors. The sitting arrangement, the lower fence and the interior decoration reveals a royal atmosphere prevailing in the room.
There are several rich tapestries used in the furniture and as wall hangings. These were made by the local people and display the contemporary social life, architecture and images of Gods worshiped by the people.
