History
Der Aa-kerk in Groningen, which dates back to the 12th Century was constructed as a dedication to St. Nicholas as well as Mary. St. Nicholas is believed to be the protector of all men at sea. Der Aa-kerk used to be called a chapel and was frequented by tradesmen as well as fishermen, who lived near the river Aa. However, with time, it gained the title of Basilica. In the 13th Century, this chapel came to be called Onze Lieve Vrouwe ter Aa or Church of Our Lady ter Aa. It started being used as a parish church thereafter.

The church that you see standing tall today has witnessed several changes that took place after 1452. This Romanogothic church was transformed into a Gothic church. In 1452, the choir of this church was made similar to that of Martinikerk. The side-aisles were added and the transept was made higher.

This was followed by the Reformation of 1594, when the church came to be called Der Aa-kerk or A-kerk. Then in 1671, lightning struck the church's tower, which caused the destruction of the top part as well as the western vaults of the nave. Though the tower was reconstructed, it again collapsed in 1710. Another tower was later built with Classical designs. The top part of the nave is extremely colorful. It was designed by the famous architect of the town, Allert Meijer. The tower was finally finished in 1718.

The church was again renovated from 1975 to 1987. In 1975, the church council handed over the maintenance of the church to another foundation that continues to maintain it even today. The building is sometimes rented out for various kinds of events.
