Location
Fraeylemaborg in Groningen is located in a country park. This park which is quite modern and has been designed by the famous L.P. Roodbaard and G.A. Blum, has the layout of an English landscape. It is situated in the heart of Slochteren.
History
Fraeylemaborg in Groningen is believed to have been constructed during the middle ages, that is, the 19th century. It was built in order to store the harvests as well as keep those harvests away from thieves. The buildings were made of masonry and stone. With time, these became to be centers of the rich. The Thomassen à Thuessink van der Hoop van Slochteren family was the last noble family to stay here. In 1972, they sold this place to the Gerrit van Houten Foundation. Following the restoration, the castle at Fraeylemaborg in Groningen was converted to a museum.
Features
The front part of the area features the farmhouse. This has now been transformed to a restaurant. Just opposite this is a coach-house. This coach-house is at present being used as a Gallery. Behind the gallery, there stands an orangerie. You will be filled with awe as you observe tropical trees here even during the winter.
The castle has many style-rooms. Exhibitions are held in these rooms. The main part of the building is a museum which houses an Asian porcelain collection. It also exhibits information about the Dutch royal house of Oranje-Nassau. There is a Large Hall which is now being used to hold receptions and concerts. The Small Hall is used for weddings. Just above the fireplace, you will find a massive portrait of Queen Mary Stuart (1691). The room can accommodate around 40 guests. So far, approximately 200 civil weddings held here.
