Menkemaborg in Groningen is located in Uithuizen, a village in the municipality of Eemsmond.
History
The Menkemaborg, a brick manor house in Groningen was built in the 14th Century. It underwent a dramatic change in around 1700. However since then, there have been many alterations. In the 18th Century, the Alberda family who lived here, entrusted artists with the responsibility of decorating the interiors of the place, giving it an elegant look. The chimney-pieces were carved with baroque designs. The interiors were also decorated with paintings of mythological themes.

Mansion
The mansion has five rooms which used to be occupied by people from the upper class of the society. Visitors can explore these rooms. You can also get a view of the kitchen.. Some of the rooms in the mansion include:

The rooms are well furnished with silverware, beautiful furniture, brassware, chinaware and the paintings of the 17th and 18th Centuries. A bed is still draped with a yellow silk sheet brought all the way from China.
In 1939-1945 the Museum which forms part of the set up, was established. The collection of military weapons and vehicles evokes images of the era of the Second World War.
Garden
The garden of the Menkemaborg in Groningen includes a labyrinth and a rose garden. Much of the garden was reconstructed since it was first built in 1705. The major attractions are the "sundial garden" and beds that enclose flowering plants. Towards the east of the manor house is the kitchen garden. This is where potherbs and vegetables are grown. The kitchen garden also contains apple trees and a pear tree arbor. At the center of the labyrinth you will notice an ancient plane tree.
The old carriage house has now been converted to a pancake restaurant.
