Brief History of Hooglandse Kerk, Leiden
The history of Hoonglandse Church dates back to the time when the bishop of Utrechet, Guy of Avesnes ordered the construction of a wooden chapel on 20th December 1314. The chapel was dedicated to St. Pancratius. A few decades later, this chapel was replaced by a simple stone church with tower. In the year 1377 started the constructions for a greater church with the priestkoor and the chorus.
During the rioting in August 1566, great damage was made to the church and numerous works of art and archival documents were lost.
