Hortus Botanicus, Leiden is one of the popular tourist attractions in Leiden which has become a popular tourist spot over the years. If you ever get an opportunity to visit Leiden you should take some time out from your tour schedule and visit the Hortus Botanicus, Leiden. It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world.

The Hortus Botanicus is located in the south western part of the city. This historical site is situated at close vicinity from the historical centre of Leiden and is positioned between the Academy building and the Leiden Observatory.

The history of Hortus Botanicus in Leiden dates back to 1587. The mayor of Leiden sanctioned the plan of establishing the hortus academicus behind the Academy building. This was done for the benefit of the medical students. The final approval was made in the year 1590 when the renowned botanist Carlous Clusius was appointed as the prefect of this heritage site. It was during this time when a lot of initiative was taken to expand the collection of the museum. The Dutch East India Company was approached to collect the rare plant specimens. Besides, a garden was also set up which exhibited a huge collection of more than 1000 plants.

Later on various other specimens of plants were collected to add on the collection. After Carlous Clusius, his successors contributed to the fame of Hortus. Herman Boerhaave made a lot of effort to collect new plant specimens. Besides, there were other contributions from the famous German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold. A lot of plant specimens were collected which included both dried and living plants.

It was in the second half of the 17th century when greenhouses were included in the complex. Later the monumental Orangery was built some where between 1740 and 1744. The museum underwent a lot of expansion in the year 1817. It was in the year 1857 when part of the building was used for Leiden Observatory.

Hortus Botanicus, Leiden is one of the ancient wonders which hold a lot of significance. Over the years this museum has become one of the major Leiden tourist attractions.
