Pieterskerk Leiden

Pieterskerk, Leiden is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Brunei. If you are planning for a trip to Netherlands then do not forget to include Pieterskerk, Leiden in your itinerary. The Pieterskerk in Leiden is a 180 years old Gothic church that. The building was founded in the year 1975 as a church out of use. It is today managed by a foundation and rented out for various events and occasions.

The present church that stands today was different in structure in the past. Around the year 1100 at this point stood the comital chapel of the counts of Holland. In 1121, the chapel was rebuilt and in the year 1268, the chapel was intended to be a parish church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. This plan needed a larger building and approximately from the year 1300, a new church was built. The new church was completed around 1350 and was equipped with a very high tower. It was nicknamed Coningh Sea. The tower was built in stages and was finally 110 meters in height and included the wooden spire of about 35 meters.

The old church was gradually replaced by the present church under the leadership of architect Rutger van Keulen, who stood at the head of the bouwloods of Bovenkerk.

In the year 1412, a new choir stand for the church was built. Bouwmeester Rutger was already dead and was followed by Aernt of the cathedral. Under his leadership, the vessel was built with aisles. After 1450, the aisles were under the leadership of Herman van Aken and he doubled them in width. After 1512 the tower had collapsed and the vessel was extended.

The Pieterskerk, Leiden started functioning in the year 1572. In the 17th century there were some houses built at the church probably to a draft of Arent van's-Gravesande. Only the houses on the side of the choir have survived.

The church is given for rent on special occasions, such as lustrumvieringen and erepromoties. The Pieterskerk serves as auditorium of the University of Leiden.
