Sightseeing in Leiden

Sightseeing in Leiden has a lot to offer to the tourists who visit Netherlands. From the age-old historic buildings to churches and from universities to botanical gardens, Sightseeing in Leiden has it all.

Tourist attractions in the city

The main museum of Leiden is a major attraction. On display in the museum are works by famous Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Jan van Goyen or Gerard Dou. "The last Judgement" from 1527 by Lucas van Leiden is the most famous painting here. Antique furniture and period decorations on display here show the everyday life of the past. The historical section of the museum highlights the liberation of the city of Leiden after the siege by the Spanish army in the year 1574.

The Hortus Botanicus is the oldest botanic garden in the world. The garden was designed by Charles de l'Ecluse, who became director of the Hortus in 1593. Because of him tulips, hyacinths and daffodils are found extensively in Netherlands. The tree next to the entrance is a part of the garden since the time of Clusius.

The Rapenburg canal is a real sightseeing treat. Alongside the canal one can come across the old university buildings. The houses on the western side and the eastern side have beautiful architecture.

The State Museum of Archaeology was founded in the year 1811 by King Willem. It has on display archaeological treasures from all parts of the world. The master piece of the collection is the Taffeh room with an Egyptian temple. The temple was donated by the Egyptian government to thank the Netherlands government for its contribution in the saving of important historical buildings during the construction of two flood-control dams in Egypt.

Other major tourist attractions

The city is known for its fortifications, churches and university buildings. The Zijlpoort and the Morspoort are two such major historical structures. Apart from one small watch tower on the Singel nothing is left of the town's city walls. The Gravensteen is another important fortification. The chief Church in the city is the Hooglandsche Kerk. It is also known as the church of St Pancras. Other important Churches are the church of St. Peter and the Marekerk church.
