Groningen is the capital city of Groningen province in the Netherlands. Groningen plays an important role in promoting music, arts and education in the northern part of the nation.

The City

Groningen has a population of 185,000. It is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. The residents of the city, students in particular contribute to a diverse cultural scene in the city.

Dating from the year 1614, the University of Groningen has a rich academic tradition. It is the second oldest university located in the Netherlands. The first female student and the first astronaut in the history of the country, the first president of the European Bank and a Nobel Prize winner were students of this university.

Attractions in the City

The Groninger Museum is the most important and most famous museum in Groningen. Recently the museum has been transformed into one of the most modern and innovative museums of its kind in Netherlands. The city also boasts of a science museum, a comic's museum and a tobacco museum.

Theater and music

Groningen has a theater located on the Turfsingel. There is another big theater and concert venue called the Martini Plaza and an important cultural venue on the Trompsingel, called the Oosterpoort. These apart the Vera, the Grand Theater, the Grote Markt and Simplon on the Boterdiep are important theatres. Several cafes in the city feature live music. Eew even specialize in jazz music. These include Jazzcafe De Spieghel on the Peperstraat. The jazz music students from the Prins Claus Conservatorium hold regular jam sessions in cafes like the Peter Pan.

Nightlife

The student population of Groningen makes its nightlife very vibrant. Its cultural scene is always alive and remarkable for a city of its size. The Grote Markt, the Vismarkt, and the Poelestraat and Peperstraat are crowded at night. This is particularly true on Thursdays and Fridays, when some bars do not close until 7 in the morning.
