Rotterdam, a city located in Zuid-Holland province in Netherlands, is situated on the banks of the lovely Niewe Maas River. The city houses a port which is Europe's largest port. Rotterdam is the country's second largest municipality. The river cuts through the heart of the city bifurcating it into norther and southern parts. The two parts of the city are connected by tunnels and bridges. Most parts of the city are below sea-level. The center of the city is located on the north bank of the river. Before the Second World War, Rotterdam used to have an airport called the Waalhaven Airport. However this airport was demolished in fear that the airport would be used by the Germans. So, when the war ended the Dutch Government built another airport called the Rotterdam Airport. It was built in Zestienhoven polder in Rotterdam. The construction of the airport started in 1955 . The airport came to service in 1956. At that time the airport was served by Swiss Air, Air France and Lufthansa. However due to stagnation in the growth of the airport revenues the airport was closed down for thirty years. In 2001 the airport again came to service.
