Albert Park, Auckland

Albert Park, Auckland is located on the Princes Street in central Auckland. The breathtaking beauty of this neatly manicured park belies its highly turbulent past that dates back to more than 60,000 years ago. Albert Park, Auckland occupies the site of the Symonds Street ridge, which in turn was built up and expanded by a thick layer of ash that was ejaculated from a volcanic eruption that occurred in the past. Albert Park in Auckland is located very close to the point where Victoria Street East, Kitchener Street and Bowen Avenue meet.

Brief History of Albert Park, Auckland

In the earlier times, the site of Albert Park in Auckland was occupied by a papakainga or a village, which was later on displaced by a European settlement named Rangipuke. In the year1845, the Albert Barracks were built on this site.

After the departure of the army from this site, its came under the jurisdiction of the city improvement commissioners and was eventually taken over by the Auckland City Council, which held a competition in 1879 to find a suitable layout for it. An architect named James Slater won this competition and was commissioned to design this site.
