Aotea Square, Auckland




Aotea Square, Auckland is largely regarded as the heart of the city and is a vast paved public area that was officially inaugurated in the year 1979 by Sir Dove-Myer Robinson. Earlier on, Aotea Square, Auckland was used as a venue for open-air concerts and gatherings and for holding markets and political rallies. Queen Street, which is the main street of the city, runs along the eastern margins of this public square.

  • The bronze statue of Sir Dove-Myer Robinson is a fine instance of sculpture present in the Aotea Square of Auckland. This statue has been erected in front of the Town Hall and was built in the year 2003 by a New Zealand sculptor called Toby Twiss.

  • A Bronze fountain designed by New Zealand Sculptor Terry Stringer is located right in the heart of this square and depicts an angular "mountain". This fountain was commissioned in the year 1979 and was meant to be displayed as the center piece of the new square.

  • There is an arch called 'Waharoa', which means Gateway in Maori, located at the Queen Street entrance of this square. This arch is made of wood and copper and was sculpted by a Maori sculptor called Selwyn Muru. This arch represents an expressionist version of a traditional Maori entry gate and illustrates conventional symbols such as birds, fish and the crescent moon along with the elements of nuclear disarmament.

  • There is a bronze statuette of Lyndon Smith placed near the Town Hal. Lyndon Smith was a famous Maori warrior whose statue was originally commissioned in the 1960s to be placed in the lobby of the Auckland Saving Bank's new building on Queen Street. However, in the year 1997, this statue was presented to the City of Auckland by this bank.

  • A 19th century bronze statue of George Eden, Lord Auckland is located in front of the Admin building in Aotea Square.
