Auckland Art Gallery in Auckland is designed by the famous Melbourne architects John H Grainger and Charles A D’Ebro. The French Chateau-style building was opened in the year 1887 as Auckland City’s Free Public Library and Municipal Offices, with the gallery space opening on 17 of February.
In 1995, another building was incorporated with the existing art gallery that was initially a telephone exchange. It became the second Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland. There is a more developmental plan to refurbish and expand the original gallery between the years 2007 and 2010, while the New Gallery will continue to show both the permanent collection and the visiting exhibitions.
The rich collections include the gallery include the paintings of New Zealand’s most famous fine artist, Frances Hodgkin. The marvelous Colin McCahon made a personal bequest to the gallery in 1987. McCahon has made a twin obsession of landscape and religion and these themes constantly intertwine in his paintings. There are interacting session held in the gallery with the students and children participating in it.
Both the gallery buildings have their own cafes: the Art Gallery Café that remains open 7 days a week and the New Gallery’s Reuben from Monday to Saturday. Auckland Art Gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm. The gallery is closed on Christmas Day and Easter Friday.
