The construction of this structure started in the year 1901 and it replaced a very small wooden church which was designed by Benjamin Mount fort. This smaller church was in use from the year 1864. The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Christchurch was opened officially in the year 1905, on 12th of February. At present the magnificent Cathedral is considered to be the finest example of renaissance style building in entire Australasia. Some say that the design of the Cathedral is based on the Church of Vincent-de-Paul, which is in Paris and belongs to the 19th century.

The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament of Christchurch got huge recognition and acclamation as well. The entire structure is made of concrete that is sheathed in Oamaru limestone. Bernard Shaw described the designer of the church as "New Zealand Brunelleschi". Around fifty men were employed at the site, during the construction of the Cathedral. It took around 90 tons of steel, 4000 cubic feet of concrete and more than 120,000 cubic feet of stone. The visit to the city of Christchurch will remain incomplete if the travelers fail to visit the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
