Botanic Gardens, Dunedin is one of the major tourist attractions in Dunedin, which is bound to be appealing to all irrespective of age. Established in 1863, it is the oldest botanic garden and remains a finest garden with an extensive and diverse collection of flora and fauna. Located in the heart of the city, the botanic garden offers a great variety of flora. With colorful flowers and a unique vibrancy, it is an excellent place to visit.
Sections in the Garden:
- The Lower Area of the Botanic Garden, Dunedin in New Zealand features a restored Winter Garden. It was opened in 1908 and since then has been used as a conservatory to cultivate plants which cannot be grown in Dunedin. Tropical and sub-tropical plants such as orchids, cycads and palms and plants from the arid regions like the cacti and succulents are grown here. It also features a massive Rock Garden located on the steep bank.
- The Upper Garden contains a rich collection of plants from North Asia, North, South and Central America, South Africa and the Himalayas. It features an extensive assortment of Australian plant collection surrounding the aviary complex.
From the lower level area of the Botanic Garden to the bordered slopes of the Upper Garden, you can view the diverse and dynamic collection of plants that are rarely found anywhere else. With the advantage of the topography and the range of microclimates, both the levels of garden houses diverse range of plants. Other than both the levels, Botanic Gardens, Dunedin in New Zealand comes out as more colorful and vibrant with the extensive rose garden, Japanese garden, bird aviary and famous Rhododendron bells.
