The Municipal Chambers, Dunedin is one of the important tourist attractions in Dunedin and has a significant historical importance. Located in the heart of the city, the building is considered a commanding piece of symbolic architecture. With its strong architectural appearance and symbolic structural design The Municipal Chambers, Dunedin is a landmark building.

The Municipal Chambers, Dunedin was built in 1880 by the young Melbourne architect RA Lawson. With a renaissance-style front wall and an elegant clock tower, the Municipal Chambers resembles the grand architectural style present in the ancient era. Located adjacent to the cathedral the chamber is architecturally superior.

The Municipal Chambers, Dunedin in New Zealand is a crucial building in the Octagon. The foundation stone of the chambers was laid on the 24 May 1878. The building is historically significant and undergone various developments. When the plan for the construction was drawn, the building was intended to include council chambers and offices, a large public hall to seat 2000 people, a clock and observation tower, fire brigade premises and a market.

The Municipal Chambers went under renovation and was designed in contemporary styles in 1939. Some changes and additions were made to the façade and the interiors. The original exterior stairs were removed and most of the interior was renovated. The upper section of the Oamaru Stone Clocktower was removed in 1964. Moreover the stone parapets, balustrades and all exterior decorative elements were removed. Soon came into existence a new civic administration building which was completed in 1982 and the chambers was vacated.

Due to its significant designs and architecture, The Municipal Chambers, Dunedin have always remained a symbolic architectural piece.
