Olveston Tours

Olveston tours showcase the heritage of Dunedin. This grand Jacobean habitat which is the grace of Dunedin can be seen through a guided tour. Olveston tours last for about one hour and have to be pre organized. Olveston had been inhabited by the famous Theomin family. This heritage house became Dunedin’s property after “Dorothy” the last descendent of Theomin family, died without any successor in 1966.

The history of Olveston encompasses through a story of Jewish immigrant David Theomin, who was a man of honor and who himself made the road to success. David Theomin warranted Sir Ernest George, a London architect to draft a remarkable house for him. That is why Olveston was the only house in the entire region designed and constructed by this immensely famous architect.

The massive construction began during 1902-1904, involving the best and efficient tradesman, Mason and Wales being the supervising architect, builder Robert Meikle, and last but not the least H.S. Bingham as the stonemason. This humongous construction involved double bricks, and moeraki gravel is been used for plastering.

Olveston stands tall as the most looked up heritage of Dunedin. Olveston tour is considered to be one the best tourist attraction in Dunedin. This one hour guided tour will make you feel like a guest in the Theomin family, this elegant, classy and spectacular house welcomes you to a world of elaborate furnishing, astonishing décor and impeccable craftsmanship. The architecture of the house is so graceful that it catches the eye and compels one to praise the overwhelming beauty.
