It was as early in the 19th century that with the initiative of Father Lampila the first wine was made in the region. Father Lampila was a French Catholic priest who made wine in the region. It is known that it was in 1921 that the first winery was established in the Waihirere Valley and the company came to be known as Waihirere Wines. The Waihirere Wines is reputed all over New Zealand as one of the most famous wine makers. This famous winery was part of the family business and changed hands only in 1973. Montana took the responsibility of the winery and they started producing one of the most famous brands commonly known as “Chardonnays”.
