For experiencing the pristine nature and wildlife of New Zealand you should visit the Pirongia Forest Park. It is 15 kilometers west of Te Awamutu and is situated on an extinct volcano. The Waikato region has flat grassy plains and features a rich natural biodiversity. The region was once volcanic and you will see many extinct volcanoes here. Pirongia Forest Park contains the Pirongia and Karioi volcanoes and is one of many Parks in New Zealand.

These volcanic mountains are now covered with thick forests. However, you can still get a glimpse of the volcanic features of the region is the form of deep gorges, conical peaks , sharp edged cliffs, rocky outcrops and domes. The Pirongia Forest Park features abundant forests and different habitats. These are an important refuge for many native plants and animals of the region. The terrain is rugged and the Pirongia Forest Park falls within the Maori tribal rohe of Tainui.

A number of bird species can be found in Pirongia Forest Park in Hamilton like grey warblers (riroriro), whiteheads (popokatea), riflemen (titipounamu), tomtits (piropiro), fantails (pirairaka), morepork (ruru), silver-eyes, kingfishers (kotare),Australasian harriers (kahu), the New Zealand pipit (pihoihoi), Kereru, tui and bellbirds (korimako). Aquatic animals found in the Pirongia Forest Park are bullies, long-finned and short-finned eels, freshwater crayfish and lamprey. Some of the plant species include pigeonwood, hinau, hangehange, kanono, pukatea, supplejack, mahoe and toropapa.

The mountains and the rivers that flow around here have a special place in the history and traditions of the Tainui people. This Hamilton Tourist Attraction is managed by the Department of Conservation. The department is responsible for monitoring forest health, undertake pest control and maintaining recreation facilities. Travelers can undertake many recreational activities like camping, hunting, walking, tramping and picnicking at the Pirongia Forest Park.
