Battle of Rangiriri As the history goes, soon after the loss of Meremere in around mid-November of 1863, the forces of the Maori king returned to the the Waikato River. They settled in Rangiriri. General Cameron of the British army decided to plan his attack on the Maoris. On 20th November Cameron moved his 861 officers from Meremere up the right bank of the river. There was tremendous bombardment here. Cameron's forces were attacked. The Maoris fought in desperation and by the next day they surrendered to Cameron. The 400 Maoris were led by Wirenu Tamihana Te Waharoa. In this battle, Cameron lost 38 soldiers, while 92 were wounded. There were 36 Maoris who lost their lives, while 183 were taken as prisoners. The Battle of Rangiriri is important for the number of chiefs who took part in it.
