One of the best loved Tourist Attractions in Hamilton is Taharoa. The city of Hamilton is situated in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 130 kilometers south of Auckland and situated on both banks of the Waikato River. The small village of Taharoa is located on the west coast of the North Island and is south of the entrance to Kawhia Harbor.

Taharoa in Hamilton was home of the great Te rauparaha but by 1822 they were forced out of their land. So they migrated southwards and established themselves in the southern part of the North Island, particularly Kapiti Island, which became their stronghold.

The main source of revenue of Taharoa is from iron sand mining which is run by Broken Hill Productions (BHP). Around the township are deposits of dark ferruginous sand. These are processed in modern plants and exported, mainly to Japan. The township is well developed socially and most of its population is Maori. This Hamilton Attraction is 45 minutes from Kawhia. Taharoa has one school which is attended by at least 30 to 40 students. There is also a small kohanga reo where 12 to 13 students (kindergarten) study. There is also a local pub and one supperette.
