The history of Invercargill dates back to the 1850s. The place came to the notice of Scottish settled in Dunedin. They began buying land for sheep runs in the far south. Today it is the country's southern most cities.

Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco heritage buildings give the city a distinctive character of its own. Stewart Island which is only an hour's ferry ride from Bluff brings you to one of the world's truly hidden paradises

Invercargill remains much the city as it was in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Once it was a swampy site, which initially attracted European settlers. They were eager to set up a flax-milling industry, was surveyed.

Along with the construction of many fine commercial buildings, predominantly of brick and plaster Invercargill's early prosperity saw the construction of notable churches as well. Among them St. Paul's Presbyterian, St. Mary's Catholic Basilica, St. John's Anglican and the First Presbyterian Church are the prominent ones..
