Facts about Napier regarding its History. Captain James cook was the first European to have predicted the existence of the place. He sailed down the east coast in October 1769 and made remarks on the site which later on came to be known as Napier. After his departure many European traders visited this place and settled here. By the 1850s, farmers and hotel-keepers started settled here in large numbers. The town of Napier was made a borough in the year 1874 and development of the surrounding marsh lands and reclamation proceeded slowly. Napier was the administrative centre for the Hawke's Bay Province from the year 1852 to 1876.In the year 1876 the Abolition of Provinces Act dissolved provincial government of Napier.

Napier experienced a tremendous earthquake in the year 1931 which killed around 258 people. Later on the town was destroyed and rebuilt in the popular Art Deco style
