Christchurch Cathedral, Nelson

The Christchurch Cathedral, Nelson is one of the favorite haunts of the travelers coming to the city of nelson from different corners of the world. Everyone coming to the city always prefer to go for sightseeing of the tourist attractions in Nelson as they throw much light on the culture and traditions of the country of New Zealand. The Christchurch Cathedral, Nelson can be seen standing tall in the upper Trafalgar Street in the city of Nelson. The towering presence of the Christchurch Cathedral gives the Trafalgar Street a uniqueness which is lacking elsewhere in the city.

The Christchurch Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral which was established in the year 1851 but at a different site. After a gap of more than a decade it was named as Christchurch Cathedral and came to hold an important position in the city. Again the year 1887 another church was constructed at the site where the present church is standing and in the process much of the same material of the previous cathedral was used. But in 1925 the construction of the present church started and the whole church was completed in the year 1965. At the beginning of the construction, the marble which was used in making the building was brought down from the Pakikiruna Range near Takaka. But after the Murchison earthquake the whole procedure became very risky and expensive as a result of which the marble was first grinded and then mixed with the plaster to bring about the unusual color and texture.

The steps of the Christchurch Cathedral in Nelson was made up of granite which was sourced from the Tonga Beach. There is another interesting thing to note about Christchurch Cathedral that the first pipe was constructed in the year 1871 in the city of London ans then later was shipped to Nelson. But in the year 1932, the organ was rebuilt and after using it for 30 years the organ was overhauled and at present comprises 2000 pipes. The length of the Christchurch Cathedral, Nelson is about 58 meters while the width is aboiut27 meters and the long tower is 35 meters in height. The cathedral is so huge that it has the seating arrangement of around 1200 people.
