The Pukekura Park, New Plymouth is situated in the center of the city. The Pukekura Park, New Plymouth is mainly a botanical Garden, opened in 1876. It was formerly a swampy area but gradually converted into a recreational park. An Oak for Great Britain, a puriri for New Zealand, a Norflolk Pine for South Pacific Islands and a Monterey Pine for America were planted to mark the public opening. It is now a groomed garden of lush greenery within the heart of the city.
There are two lakes in the park. There are also row boats on hire, a children's playground, a cricket garden, fernery and display houses, kiosk, fountain and waterfall, walking trails through the bushes, the historic band of Rotunda and the Bowl of Brooklands.
There are 22 walking ways constituting the entrances and the car can access from Grover Street, Victoria Road and Fillis Street.
The Pukekura Park provides various kinds of entertainment, that's surely going to make the New Plymouth Travels a pleasant experience. It should be included in the plan meant for the sightseeing in New Plymouth.
The “Bowl of Brooklyn”, is one of the major tourist attractions in New Plymouth. It is an outdoor amphitheatre. National and International Acts take place regularly at the Bowl. The nighttime concerts are memorable indeed. Next to the Garden there are gardens, beautifully decorated in English style and a Children's Zoo.
A native orchid and fern collection have been created in the Fernery, along with other exotic sub- tropical plants.
A traditional torii gate named “Mishima Gate,” was built on the 10th anniversary of Mishima, Japan, the sister city of New Plymouth. It has been painted very colorfully, to represent the typical Japanese forest.
There is a separate garden named Kumming Garden, which is a gift from the Mayor of Kumming, China , another sister city of New Plymouth. There are traditional Chinese craftsmanship represented in the moon gate framing, the pavilion, dragon motifs and hand crafted wood carvings.
Pukekura Garden, New Ply mouth also has a sport’s ground, featuring international teams competing in cricket, rugby league and soccer matches. The grass terraces provide view of the entire ground.
The spectacular Festival of Lights is an annual event hosted at the Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. Held from December to February, it is really a spectacular event, as hundreds of different lights turn the park into a fairyland venue.
