New Plymouth is the port and main city in the Taranaki region. Situated on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, this region has shores, mountains and national parks. It was in 1828 that Richard "Dicky" Barrett landed on the New Plymouth shore and then built a trading post at Ngamotu in New Plymouth. The original inhabitants of the region were the Maoris. Barrett traded with the Maoris. It was on behalf of the New Zealand Company that Barrett initiated the trading.

It was the William Bryan, shipping vessel that brought with it many people. These people were the first settlers of this region. The ship anchored on the 31st of March in the year 1841. After this event a series of conflicts and disputes ensued between the Maoris and the settlers. Very soon the city was converted into a fortified garrison during the Taranki Civil War.
