Cricket in New Zealand is one of the most popular sports in the country. Cricket in New Zealand is considered as the bet summer sport in New Zealand. New Zealand is one of the twelve test playing nations.

Sports in New Zealand is incomplete without the mention of cricket. There are many cricket fields in New Zealand which also has all the modern facilities in it. The game is watched with interest by a large proportion of the population.

Cricket in New Zealand was first played in the year 1930 but it took twenty six years to win the first test match i.e in the year 1956.The national cricket team was at its peak form in the 70’s and 80’s.Sir Richard Hadlee considered to be the best player in the history of Cricket in New Zealand played during this time. He was the first person to take 400 test wickets.

The New Zealand Cricket team is also known as the Black caps. They played their first test match in the year 1929-30 against England at Christ church and thus became the fifth test playing nation. New Zealand Cricket tasted its first victory in the year 1956 when they defeated the West Indies at Eden Park in Auckland.

New Zealand played their first one day international match in the year 1972-73 against Pakistan at Christ church. The current test playing captain is Daniel Vettori who replaced Stephen Fleming. Fleming was the most successful captain of New Zealand who led the team to 28 test victories.

The New Zealand cricket team came to be known as the “Black Caps “ from January 1988 and the new name was given by the sponsor “Clear Communications”.

The New Zealand cricket team has played different types of championships. Some of them are the World Cup, Mini world cup, Twenty twenty world championships and the Commonwealth games where New Zealand got the bronze medal.

The most notable players of New Zealand are Sir Richard Hadlee, Jeff and Martin Crowe. Adam Parore and Stephen Fleming
