Rugby in New Zealand first originated in the year 1870. The major cups related to rugby are the Air New Zealand Cup, the amateur Heartland Championship and the Super 14, in which New Zealand has five franchises. The country also hosted the first ever World Cup in the year 1987.New Zealand has also won the rights to hold the world championships in rugby for the year 2011.

Rugby in New Zealand was first introduced in the year 1870 by Charles John Monro.From then on, the game has been an integral part of sports in New Zealand.Monro encountered the game while studying at Christ's College. On his return, Monroe introduced the game to Nelson College, and the first rugby union match was played against Nelson football club on 14 May.

Next year, the game was formalized in Wellington, and subsequently rugby was taken up in Wanganui and Auckland in 1873 and Hamilton in 1874. New Zealand Rugby saw a marked development in skills from the year 1930. In 1976, the first ever season of the National Provincial Championship took place. In its inaugural match, the teams comprised seven North Island teams and four South Island teams. In the year 1987, the world cup was hosted jointly by New Zealand and Australia. The All blacks team representing New Zealand reached the final and met France. It was a hard fought game for the All Blacks Team and eventually they won the game and lifted the cup for the first time.

In 1992, the Super Sixes competition started and was later on expanded to the Super 10. Rugby entered the professional era in the mid 90s with nations like South Africa and Australia taking part in the games.

Among the best rugby playing teams in New Zealand, the All blacks team deserves special mention. They are the oldest team in New Zealand and are also famous for lifting the world up for the first time. The other important teams playing Rugby in New Zealand are Junior All Blacks, the New Zealand Maori, Heartland XV and the Black Ferns.
