Auckland

Auckland is also known as the Auckland metropolitan area or Greater Auckland. Auckland is situated in the north island of New Zealand and is the largest urban area of the country. Auckland is also the most populous city of New Zealand with almost 1.3 million people. Aucland also has the largest Polynesian population of the world.

Auckland is a combination of the Auckland city, North shore city and the urban parts of Waitakere, Manukau and the Papakura District. The place is located between the Hauraki gulf of the Pacific ocean to the east, the Hunaua ranges to the south-east and the central part is occupied by an isthmus between the Manukau Harbor on the Tasman Sea and the Waitemata Harbor on the Pacific Ocean.

The city expanded rapidly during the first half of the twentieth century due to the development of the tram and railway lines. As days rolled, the associated urban areas like the north shore and the Manukau city in the north expanded tremendously. Being a very populous city, majority of Auckland is still dominated by a large number of suburban buildings.

Geography and climate of Auckland: The place is famous for its volcanoes. About 50 volcanic vents are there in the place which take the form of cones, lagoons and depressions. Some of these vents have produced extensive lava flows. The most recent and largest volcanoes can be found in the Rangitoto Island. These vents were formed about 1000 years back. The island has a rich acidic soil and hence few birds and insects can be found here.

Climate of Auckland: Auckland has a warm and temperate climate which is characterized by warm humid summers and mild damp winter. The daily average temperature of this place is about 23.7 degree Celsius while during winter the temperature may even drop to -2.5 degree celsuis.

Tourist attractions in Auckland are many and range from various parks to market places. The Auckland town hall is famous for holding important concerts and meetings. The best places for shopping are New market and Parnwell.

Sightseeing in Auckland also includes visits to many art galleries and museums. The Auckland Art gallery and museums like Auckland War Memorial Museum and the National Maritime Museum deserve special mention.
