Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. Wellington is also the second largest urban area of New Zealand and the most populous national capital in the Oceania region.
Wellington is also extended to the Greater Wellington or the Wellington Region which occupies the urban area as well as the Kapiti coast and the Rimutaka Range to the Wairarapa.
Wellington was named in the honor of Arthur Wellesley who was the first duke of Wellington. The title of Lord Wellesley is derived from the town of Wellington which is a county of Somerset in England.
The place is the political centre of New Zealand and not only houses the Parliament but also has the head offices of many ministries and deprtments.Many foreign embassies are also located in Wellington. Wellington is also the centre of New Zealand’s film and theatre industry. The famous Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the biennial International Festival of the Arts are all located in Wellington. In the year 1865 Wellington became the capital of New Zealand replacing Auckland. Parliament held its first meeting in the year 1862 but at that time the city was not declared the official capital of the place. Wellington also houses the highest court in New Zealand, the Supreme court. The official residence of the Governor General, the Government House is also located in New Zealand.
Wellington is located at the southern tip of North Island. To the north of Wellington lies the golden beaches of the Kapiti coast. The Rimutaka Range divides Wellington from the broad plains of the Wairarapa, which is famous for its wine reserves.
Tourist attractions in Wellington are many. It has beautiful natural harbor, green hillsides and exotic colonial villas. The Wellington region has a huge reserve of thick forests and regional parks which covers an area of 500 square kilometers.
Sightseeing in Wellington includes the Victoria University and Wellington Botanic Garden. The garden occupies about 25 hectares of protective forests and different cornifers. The garden is also famous for the Rose Garden which houses different varieties of roses
