The Kahikatea Walk in Palmerston North, true to its name, features large numbers of mature kahikatea in this reserve. If you lie on your back and look up at the canopy, you cannot do without admiring the spectacular beauty of these majestic trees. You will also find here a stand of rata trees beside the track which has grown depending on the larger species of trees. The rata trees perch in the tree as an epiphyte and send down roots which form their ground support. With the growth of the rata trees, their roots become twisted and interwoven with each other. It is also interesting to note that the rata eventually grows larger than its host tree, and at times, at the cost taking the life of the host tree in the process.
